Birth can be scary.

It is full of unknowns; will it hurt, can I actually do it, will the provider I want actually be on call when the time comes, when will it REALLY be time, how long will it actually take?

Your body goes through this process that is foreign and nothing can truly prepare you until you are really in it… I mean 18 different people can describe to you what a contraction feels like but you don’t truly understand until you experience them.

You’ll likely have a ton of questions; is it time to go to the hospital, this hurts … is there something that will make it go away, what do you mean I am not far enough along to be admitted… my plan was the epidural, I need it now.

You’re under the impression your doctor or nurse will be there to support you, help you, offer suggestions but you find you’re left in your room to figure out this labor thing on your own.

So, what if I told you it doesn’t have to be this way?

That’s what a doula is for.

Think of a doula as your hands-on tour guide to the birthing process. I can help you figure out when to go to your birth place, I can help you interpret the medical jargon so you are able to make an informed decision, I’ll help make you more comfortable, and no matter what decision you choose I will have your back. I will be by your side with my undivided attention, not just for 5 minutes but for hours (and sometimes even days). I am there for not just you but also your partner. I will be your birth team’s biggest cheerleader.

What do you get as a client?

I will be on-call 24/7 to come assist you in labor from 38-42 weeks. **Don’t worry! If you were to need me outside that window, I will likely still be available, and if for some reason I am not, I have some pretty amazing back-ups that would be able to make it to your side.

My professional resource lists. Need assistance in an area I can’t help you with, don’t worry I’ve got a list for that; photographers, lactation consultants, placenta encapsulation, prenatal yoga, chiropractors, acupuncturist, and so much more.

Access to my lending library; books, audiobooks, and DVDs.

Access to me for questions, answers, and support as soon as your contract is signed until baby is born and beyond. If you’ve got a question, I likely have an answer, and if I don’t, I’ll likely know where to find an answer for you. Get home from an appointment with your provider and you’ve forgotten everything they told you about an upcoming test, ask. Weighing the pros and cons about a newborn procedure, ask. You’re just worried about labor, ask. Big things or little things I’m here for you to ask.

At least 1 one-on-one prenatal visit in your home. In this 2-3 hour meeting we’ll talk all the ins and outs of your birth preferences and goals. I’ll get acquainted with your home so when the time comes, I’ll know where to find you and were things are. When you’re in labor the last thing I want to do is interrupt your concentration with questions about where to find water and which bathroom to use.

Once labor starts, I’m all yours!

Once you think you are in labor, just let me know. We’ll talk about what is going on and how you’re feeling. Even if you’re not ready for me to come over I’ll be there for you over the phone. Once we decide together that it is time for me to join you, I’ll come. If you’re not ready to head to the birth center or hospital I’ll meet you at home first (and if you’re planning a home birth, then I’m definitely coming to your house 😉).

I bring a bag full of goodies with me to help aid in your comfort. Including massage tools, a Rebozo (which is a long Mexican scarf that can be used to help better position baby and aid in comfort for the birthing person), a fan, a speaker, a blow-up birth stool, and more.

I’ll be there to provide hands-on support, offer words of encouragement, to guide your partner to better support you, to run for water and snacks, to help fill a tub. I’m there in whatever capacity you need me to be, even if that is just to hold space for you. This is your birth, and I am honored to be invited in.

Once the baby is born, I’ll be around for 1 to 2 hours post birth. I can help with initial breastfeeding support, am able to answer any questions about the birth, and am there to make sure you have what you need to get settled in as a new family. Depending on how many postpartum visits you opt for I will be back within a few days to a week to check in and ensure your family is getting off to the best start possible. I am still available to you by phone for any questions you may have, or for any resource suggestions you may need.

Here's What My Clients Say:

This class is a total game changer for us. I’d heard negative [birth] stories…I was scared and very on edge. Then once we started taking the class, and when we learned about interventions that I was apprehensive about… It brought us together in that [my partner] understood birth more, and I understood it more. And as soon as I went into labor, we were on. We were a team.

I really appreciated how informative it was. I knew a lot about the biology of birth and babies, but what we learned was just very impressive. It was a really good experience—fairly chill, fairly laid-back, and not nearly as stressful and awkward as I thought it might be. All the information—I never would’ve thought there was that much information out there!

Take this course! I started out nervous but I am now very excited and looking forward to the birth of our baby! My husband and I feel very prepared for our baby’s birth day.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m already hiring a doula why do I need a class too?

I feel very strongly that every person giving birth should attend a childbirth education class with a partner. As your doula I’ll be there to support you in any decision you make but I can’t make them for you. I can’t weigh the pros and cons of interventions or inductions. I can’t be the one to decline or accept things. This is not my birth, it’s yours.

You and your baby deserve to have a knowledge base to pull from in labor. It’s hard to hear something new for the first time and make an educated decision while your body is working to push a baby out. I will be there to talk decision though with you, I will remind you of the pros and cons, I will remind you to ask more questions of your provider when you’re unsure of the next move, but I cannot make the final decisions for you.

ALSO, I am not your partner. I will not get your oxytocin flowing like your partner does. I might be able to squeeze your hips more effectively but my touch will not bring the love like theirs will. They need to know how to help keep you comfortable too. Oxytocin in the love hormone, it helped bring this baby into existence, and it’s going to help get this baby out. I’ll be there to help give your partner ideas about what to do next, or stand in for them when they need a quick nap and a sandwich. But they should be there whispering words of encouragement in your ears while I’m squeezing your hips. We will all work together as a team and we need everyone on the team on the same page.

Even if your partner is not your significant other, and they are your mom or your sister or you best friend. That person that you choose to stand by your side is going to have a strong bond with you. They are going to make you feel safe and loved and protected.

PLUS, by taking a class you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you like and don’t like before labor actually starts so no need to weed though stuff that isn’t going to work. This helps you, your partner, and me to have a better labor.

Even if you have taken a childbirth class in previous pregnancies it is still helpful to refresh and refocus. Plus, different classes offer a different perspective. Taking the time to stop and focus on this new life, to make a plan for this baby is going to make a world of difference.

If you truly feel you and your partner do not NEED to take a childbirth class please contact me and I would be happy to chat.
